Embracing Your New Co-Workers

Unexpectantly, many of us are now working from home with co-workers that are not yet of legal working age.  I know it’s challenging, but what I can tell you, from experience, is that when you look back, you will wonder how you did it -- but you WILL do it!

As an entrepreneur, I went back to work at the office immediately with my newborn babies.  Both times, I viewed it as the best of both worlds, as I got to be with them, but was also able to continue doing what I loved.  I am thankful that there weren’t any zoom or video calls at the time!

Was it easy?  No!  I remember once apologizing to a client for my son crying. I will never forget his response; he quickly told me to never apologize.

That was 15 years ago, and corporate cultures were still quite intense.  In 2020, we are fortunate that many companies understand, especially in the current times, that children may be a part of your work situation. It’s not even out of the ordinary to see a child pop in and out of a Zoom call. We get it. Don’t stress, take a deep breath and remember -- this too shall pass.

While we’re all likely worrying about our kids and what sort of trouble they’re getting into while we’re working, the reality is that they’re learning by our example and cherishing the time with us.  At 15 and 11, my kids are so used to me working at home that they’re now taking care of me at times.  When this is all over, I’m certainly going to miss my daughter bringing me lunch and my son assisting me with technical issues.

My advice: take this time. Teach them what you know, remember you aren’t alone and embrace your new co-workers.
