HOW TO MAKE VIRTUAL CONFERENCES WORK FOR YOU (AND YOUR BUSINESS)

Over the last few months, we have participated in many virtual conferences, both as attendees and sponsors. As an organizer of in-person events and conferences in the past, I can certainly draw on many similarities, differences and challenges between the two styles of events, but also a lot of opportunity for creativity and growth.

Tip 1: SHOW UP

As you would in person, you need to be present, and in a virtual event, even more so. Be present and active, comment and engage. Check out the event in advance, so you can register properly and you don’t have technical difficulties along the way.

Tip 2: VISIT THE E-BOOTHS

E-booths, virtual booths, online expos and markets are all a part of our reality. If you’re an attendee, make sure you visit these booths and connect. Check out the business offers and exchange information for future use.

If you are a booth owner/sponsor, think about how you can make others visit and engage. Ensure your booth or breakout group is reflective of your business and brand. Consider adding signage or graphics, create a video to showcase your company and tailor your offerings for the specific audience. If there’s an opportunity to showcase your products LIVE, do so.

Tip 3: MAKE YOURSELF MEMORABLE

This tip is both for attendees and presenters/sponsors. Change your profile photo, update your details, turn on your camera. Let us know what you do, and perhaps what you’re looking to learn.

Tip 4: TAKEAWAYS

As in any conference, takeaways (both physical and conceptual) keep your event on the mind for days and weeks to come. There is an obvious challenge with virtual events, in that attendees may walk away.

If you’re an organizer, consider sending a pre-event swag bag featuring your sponsors and event. Perhaps add an interactive element to the event using these promotional items. And don’t forget incentives: during the virtual conference, add giveaways, contests and promotional pricing to keep everyone engaged and entertained.
